It’s almost possible to watch live football daily these days, but there are still a few times of the year when it’s not on. During these bleak times thank heavens for the videogame industry in which footy titles are some of the most popular – so it’s no surprise that we are bombarded with a never-ending stream of them. Some are pleasing on the eye but lacking in gameplay, others lack the frilly visuals but may offer better gameplay – goodness gracious, which one should we buy?
If you appreciate gameplay over looks, then you might just want to check out this offering from Ubi Soft. Not long after you switch it on and make your team selection you’ll become aware of exactly how much has been crammed onto this cartridge.
Actually, there are two games depending on whether you decide to play as a player manager or a full manager. The former is by far the best option as you get to manage the team AND play the matches. You’ll need to use guile, tactical astuteness and hope to pick up a little luck as you play your way through a gruelling championship season. Included are European competitions and a domestic cup to give the game a real feel of authenticity. If only the players were as authentic – the surnames of your favourite stars are there but they play for different clubs (eg Roberto Giggs plays for Arsenal).
So once you’ve got your team together you can begin your assault on the title. You have seven European leagues’ top and second divisions to choose from so there’s plenty of choice available. You could play as Real Madrid or try and guide a Scottish second division team to promotion and on into Europe. Set aside plenty if time if you choose the latter option!
The matches work very well with the top-down view and are quickly engrossing. It may not have looks of some of its rivals, but it plays like a dream. Sadly, the great gameplay is not matched by the audio – sound is basic to say the least but this a mere blip in an otherwise great footy release.
The two-player link-up option will add further longevity as you get to battle out the championship with a mate. It’s one thing to beat the CPU to the trophy but nothing can compare to beating a friend to it. This game will keep football fans very happy for a long time indeed.

Great fun for long train trips!
A friend of mine sent me a GBA over last month with a couple of games (Grand Tourismo Advance and a golf game - GTA is great, the golf is pretty standard). At first I played the thing every day on the way to work on the tube, (attracting much attention from nearby children - I dont think their mothers where too happy when they piped up "can I have one mum, PLEASE"!) but I soon became quite bored. The screen is just not good enough. It gets really annoying driving high-speed cars and not being able to see the side of the road! I hear in Japan that you can get a magnifying glass and clip on lights, which help a little, but double the weight and size of the thing. One thing I cant comment on is the link up facility. From what Ive heard its jolly good fun though. To round up, the GBA is good fun but is a tad expensive (especially the games). If youve got a few mates with GBAs it should be great when liked up. I think you only need one copy of the game for link up gaming. The screen is the only downside - so if you dont mind pointing at a window, holding at an angle and hoping that nobody walks in front of you, then BUY IT!

Nice machine - shame about the screen
I was walking throught town on the 22nd of June and just decided to buy a Gameboy Advance. Id thought about buying one in the run up to the release date and decided against it. But... I went and bought it anyway and Im glad I did! Having played both Mario Bros 2 and F-Zero on the SNES and then on the GBA there is very little to differentiate between them. The graphics are clear and bright and even with F-Zeros speed you can still see the tracks + the addition of the two shoulder buttons gives a lot more control. The only two gripes about this smart machine are: a) The sound is still a little tinny from the original speaker (Its great through headphones though!) b) The screen is a little hard to see. An option to backlight the screen via a switch so you could turn it off in good light and not drain the batteries (remember the GameGear?) would have been an idea, or even just to be able to alter the contrast/brightness. Final verdict: Cracking little machine with all of the back catalogue of original games available to play NOW! I want Mario Bros 3!!

Gameboy Advance
Wonderfull, Simply Wonderfull. about the same size as a GBC on its side and with are larger screen! it is very light even with batterys and a game in it the batterys will last for hours at a time and power packs are a great way of saving money on batterys.
the graphics are as good as or even, better than the ps1s and yes it is a little dark, but if you are outside or near a light then you will be ok, or if it is a problem then just get some floodlights or something like it and a s long as you treat it with care the screen will be free from scratchs ( i got mine on the day of release and still it is fine. the thing is very strong, i have droped mine and it has bounced down the stairs and been fone, but do be carefull, the screen will smash if you are too rough with it too much. what more can i say, great sound, great looks, great games, great graphics, great feel and great too play if you dont have it then get it.
